Custom Post Types (CPT) are ways of breaking down content types within a Content Management System (CMS). This includes WordPress, Joomla and Drupal to name just a few of the main ones. I have also heard CPT’s called ‘streams’ or Data Types amongst other CMS’s. What is important in all of this is that CPT’s are there to assist in creating a solid foundation for the information within a website or application and should be approached seriously and with research.
Within the numerous years I have been working with information, the desire to structure information just made sense. The idea of taking information and allowing that information to belong and grow within a caring information architecture also made sense.
WordPress and CPT’s
There are a number of approaches one can use to manage CPT’s in WordPress. There is code level where information architecture is described using PHP code. There is also the Plugin approach which adds a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to the process of adding Post Types to your site/web app.
